Taking a Dog from Canada to Australia: the seven-month project, mapped

Let's not sugar-coat it: this is the hardest mainstream pet route in the world. A blood test that starts a 180-day clock, an import permit, disease tests in a 45-day window, and real quarantine at the end.

But it's completely doable — and one obscure early appointment at a CFIA office decides whether your dog does 10 days of quarantine or 30. Almost nobody tells Canadian owners about it until it's too late to take.

Before anything else

The good news and the bad news

The good news: Australia's rules are brutally explicit — every step, window and fee is published, so there are no judgment calls to get wrong, only dates. Quarantine is 10 days, not months, if the CFIA identity check happens early. Canada even gets one concession the USA doesn't: the canine influenza requirement can be met by vaccination or isolation-and-testing, your choice. And cats skip the disease tests entirely.

The bad news: the timeline is geological and nothing about it negotiates. The 180-day clock starts when your dog's blood arrives at the laboratory — and Canada has no approved lab, so the sample rides a courier to Kansas State first. The import permit (AUD $626) can take up to 123 business days and can't be lodged until the result exists. The quarantine facility books only after the permit, guarantees nothing, and sits outside Melbourne — a city no Canadian nonstop currently serves, so your dog connects through a hub as manifest cargo. Plan 7–8 months and it's orderly. Plan less and every queue becomes a crisis.

The checklist

The requirements at a glance

Seven things, in this exact order. Step 2 is the one Canadian owners find out about too late — it cannot be added after step 4.

  1. ISO microchip

Before everything else. Australia rejects chips starting with 999, and a chip number mistyped on any lab report later means redoing that test — DAFF accepts no corrections. Scan at every appointment.

  2. The CFIA identity check — the 10-day-quarantine key

An official identity verification done by the CFIA itself at an Animal Health Office — a separate appointment that must land before the blood draw and can't be the same visit. Simpler than the American two-clinic version, but booked like everything CFIA: in advance, paid ahead. Miss it and quarantine triples from 10 days to 30. It cannot be retrofitted.

  3. Rabies vaccination, current and continuous

Valid before the blood draw and continuously through export — a single day's lapse anywhere in the middle voids the whole sequence and restarts the 180-day clock. Set a renewal reminder the day you start.

  4. The RNATT blood draw — and the courier to Kansas

The rabies antibody test (0.5 IU/ml or higher). Canada has no approved lab, so the sample ships to Kansas State University — and Australia counts 180 days from the day it arrives there, not the draw date. Courier the sample express, track it, and get the lab's received date in writing: that date is day zero of everything.

  5. Import permit, then the quarantine booking

Apply through BICON the day your blood result and declaration exist — AUD $626 (about CA$565), typically 20–40 business days but up to 123, assessed strictly in order. Only a granted permit lets you book Mickleham, and a permit does not guarantee a quarantine bed. Book the moment you can.

  6. The 45-day test-and-treatment window

Inside the final 45 days: Leishmania test (lab-run only), Leptospirosis vaccination or test, Brucella test if your dog isn't desexed — and Canada's canine influenza step: vaccinate, or isolate and test. Parasite treatments overlap on their own clocks: external from 30 days out, internal twice, 14+ days apart, the second within 5 days of the flight.

  7. Fly into Melbourne, then Mickleham

Final vet exam and CFIA endorsement of the whole document set in the last 5 days, then your dog flies as manifest cargo into Melbourne — connecting through an approved hub, since no Canadian nonstop serves it — with nothing in the crate (toys are destroyed as biosecurity waste). Then 10 days at Mickleham, and the reunion.

Count backwards from your flight

The timeline that runs your year

Two clocks rule this route: 180 days from the Kansas lab, and the 45-day window at the end. Everything else schedules around them.

8 months out

Chip, the CFIA visit, rabies

Start the paperwork trio. Chip verified, the CFIA identity-check appointment booked and done, rabies vaccination current. The order is absolute: identity before blood, blood after vaccination. CFIA offices book by appointment with advance online payment — call your regional Animal Health Office early.

The classic failure #1

Drawing the blood first “to get the clock started” and planning the CFIA identity check after. It doesn't count retroactively — quarantine goes from 10 days (~CA$2,100) to 30 (~CA$3,100), and no one can fix it.

7 months out

The draw, the border courier, day zero

Draw, ship express to Kansas State, track it across the border, mark the calendar. Customs delays on a biological sample are real; every day in transit pushes your earliest landing day. When KSU confirms receipt, you finally know day 180 — write it in ink.

The classic failure #2

Counting 180 days from the draw date. A sample that spent four days reaching Kansas means a dog booked to land four days early — and early arrivals sit in quarantine at your expense until their real day 180.

5–6 months out

Permit lodged, quarantine booked

The moment the RNATT report and declaration exist, lodge the permit (AUD $626) — every week of delay burns your 12-month RNATT validity from the far end. When the permit lands, book Mickleham immediately and have your agent build the cargo routing into Melbourne around the intake date.

Final 45 days

The test-and-treatment gauntlet

Leishmania, Lepto, Brucella-if-entire, the canine-flu step, two worming rounds, tick cover — each with its own sub-window, all inside 45 days, finishing with the final exam and the CFIA's endorsement of every document in the last 5. The second worming and the endorsement share the same final week; a stat holiday in that week is a real failure mode.

Travel + 10 days

The hub, Melbourne, Mickleham, the gate

Your dog flies cargo through an approved hub into Melbourne (the airline files the “OK to Forward” with quarantine before departure), transfers to Mickleham, and serves the 10 days while you get the keys to the new place. Then the gate opens, and the seven-month project ends the way it should.

Budget

What it actually costs

Honest CAD ballparks for a mid-size dog. The government fees are published and exact; the vet and freight lines are the estimates.

Ranges compiled August 2026. DAFF permit and quarantine fees are official AUD rates converted at ~0.90 CAD; CFIA fees are official; vet, lab, flight and agent lines are estimates — get real quotes.
ItemTypical range
CFIA appointments identity check + final endorsement · official fees are small; the discipline is the cost $50 to $150
RNATT test + courier to Kansas State express-ship it and track it — the clock starts on arrival $200 to $400
Disease tests + canine influenza step Leishmania, Lepto, Brucella if entire · CIV vaccine or isolation-and-test $350 to $750
Treatments, final exam, certificates the last-45-days block at your vet $350 to $800
Import permit AUD $626, official rate · non-refundable ~$565
Quarantine, 10 days at Mickleham official fees · the 30-day version runs ~$3,100 ~$2,100
Flight, manifest cargo to Melbourne quote-only; a hub connection is unavoidable $3,500 to $6,500
Agent near-mandatory for the routing, transhipment and quarantine logistics $1,200 to $3,000
Realistic total doing the vet-and-paperwork legwork yourself · full service quotes run higher still $8,500 to $14,500

The best trade on this route: the CFIA identity check costs a small appointment fee early and saves roughly $1,000 in quarantine fees and 20 kennel days at the end. The offer expires permanently the moment the blood is drawn.

Booking the journey

Transport realities

Australia's biosecurity system decides the airport, the routing, and even what's allowed inside the crate.

Melbourne is not a preference, it's the law

Mickleham is Australia's only quarantine facility, so every dog arrives as manifest cargo directly into Melbourne International — no Sydney landings, no domestic connections first. Moving to Brisbane? Your dog still does Melbourne and Mickleham; the domestic leg comes after quarantine.

No nonstop from Canada — the hub matters

No Canadian carrier currently flies nonstop to Melbourne, so your dog connects — staying airside under supervision — at an approved hub on the routing your agent builds. Ask directly about the hub's animal facilities and connection times; that's where your dog spends the long hours.

The permit is not a bed, and the crate travels empty

A granted permit doesn't guarantee a Mickleham place on your date — book the day it arrives. And Australia's biosecurity rules mean the crate holds a dog and bedding, nothing else: a favourite toy packed for the flight is destroyed on arrival as biosecurity waste.

Banned breeds and the upside-down seasons

Australia prohibits dogo Argentino, fila Brasileiro, Japanese tosa, pit bull terriers, presa Canario and several wolfdog hybrids outright. Seasons flip too: a December arrival is 40°C Melbourne summer — the riskiest cargo window for snub-nosed dogs, which Air Canada won't carry in the hold at any time of year.

The scheduling truth of this route: everything waits on the Kansas lab date, then everything races the RNATT's 12-month expiry. Start early and it all fits with room to breathe. Start late and every queue — permit, quarantine, freight — becomes a crisis.

The 5 mistakes that cost the most

  1. The CFIA identity check done late — or not at all

The single most expensive omission: it must precede the blood draw, it's a separate CFIA appointment, and it turns 30 days of quarantine into 10. Discovered late, it can't be fixed at any price.

  2. A lapsed rabies booster mid-sequence

The vaccination must stay valid continuously from before the draw until export. One lapsed day, even at month five, voids the RNATT and restarts the 180-day clock from a new draw. Put the booster date everywhere you look.

  3. 180 counted from the wrong day

The clock starts when the sample arrives at Kansas State — and from Canada that's a cross-border courier trip with customs in the middle. Every transit day pushes your earliest landing date. Express-ship, track, and get KSU's received date in writing.

  4. The permit lodged “when things settle down”

Worst-case processing is 123 business days, the queue has no fast lane, and the permit dies with your RNATT's 12-month validity. Lodged late, a slow permit can swallow the entire travel window. Apply the day the blood result exists.

  5. A typo on a lab report

DAFF accepts no corrections to a microchip number, collection date or result — the test is redone inside whatever window remains, with the Kansas courier round-trip on top. Check every digit the day each report arrives.

Your next step

That's the system. Now it needs your dates.

Seven months, two ruling clocks, a cross-border courier, a dozen sub-windows. This is precisely the route where a plan that counts every date backwards for you, checked before it reaches you earns its keep — because here, a missed date isn't an inconvenience, it's a season.

Questions

Canada → Australia, asked and answered

Does my dog have to do quarantine?

Yes — every dog from Canada quarantines at Mickleham, near Melbourne. The default minimum is 30 days; it drops to 10 if the CFIA identity check happened before the blood draw. Home quarantine doesn't exist. This is the route where preparation literally buys freedom.

How long does the whole thing take?

Plan on 7 to 8 months. The 180-day clock from the Kansas lab is the immovable core — and the cross-border courier adds days before it even starts. DAFF's own floor is “at least 6 months”; that's the frictionless best case, not a plan.

What's the canine influenza requirement?

Dogs from Canada must either be fully vaccinated against canine influenza or undergo isolation and testing for it — Canada gets a choice the USA doesn't. For most owners the vaccine is the simpler path; schedule it into the pre-export window.

What exactly is the CFIA identity check?

An official identity verification performed by the CFIA at an Animal Health Office — separate from, and strictly before, the blood-draw visit. Simpler than the American two-clinic process, but it books like all CFIA appointments: in advance, paid online ahead of time. Reward: 10-day quarantine instead of 30.

Why does the blood go to Kansas?

Canada has no approved rabies-titre lab, so samples go to the US — Kansas State is the usual choice. Australia's 180 days count from the day the sample arrives there, which makes the courier leg part of your timeline. Express, tracked, receipt in writing.

Why Melbourne? We're moving to Sydney.

Because the country's only quarantine facility is at Mickleham, outside Melbourne, and dogs must land there directly as manifest cargo — connecting through a hub, since no Canadian nonstop serves Melbourne. The Sydney leg is a normal domestic flight after quarantine ends.

Are the rules different for cats?

Same spine — RNATT, 180 days, permit, Mickleham, the same 10-vs-30-day rule — but cats need no disease tests and no canine-flu step. One recent change to know: Savannah, Safari, Chausie and (from 1 March 2026) Bengal cats are prohibited imports.

Is this legal advice?

No. This guide is assistance based on official sources: Australia's Department of Agriculture (DAFF), the CFIA, and the quarantine facility's published fees. Requirements change, so always confirm final requirements with the relevant authorities and your vet before you travel.
